BIOS Vendor Breaks Linux
How a single firmware update from Dell ended my trust in the platform.
I ran Dell PCs for years. Between 2018 and mid-2024, I had three of them: a desktop, a workstation, and a laptop. All running Linux. They were fast, efficient, and reliable enough. I trusted them to get work done without drama.
Then Dell rolled out a series of mandatory "critical" BIOS updates, and everything changed.
The Night the Workstation Died
I installed a critical BIOS update on my Dell Inspiron 5680 after waking from sleep. The machine came back with only one CPU thread active instead of twelve. Every application crawled. Nothing I tried fixed it: kernel parameters, ACPI toggles, full BIOS resets.
The only workaround was disabling modern sleep states entirely. This was an unacceptable trade-off for a daily driver.
I sold that machine shortly after. More importantly, I sold my trust in Dell.
The OptiPlex Was Next
When my aging OptiPlex 3060 started showing its age, I had the chance to walk away from Dell entirely. Newer kernels kept introducing fresh regressions on their hardware: audio hiss, power management quirks, GPU driver drops.
The pattern was clear: Dell's firmware team treats Linux as an afterthought. Every update is a roll of the dice. For a productive environment that relies on speed and reliability, that is not a sustainable arrangement.
The Mac Studio
In spring 2025, I invested in a Mac Studio M4 Max running macOS Sequoia. It isn't as customizable as Linux was, but it does something more important: it works. Every day. Without exception.
The M4 Max's unified memory handles heavy LLM workloads via Ollama at speeds no amount of tinkering with kernel parameters could match. For production work like video editing, compilation, and development, it is a different tier of experience.
Windows 11 on the Zephyrus
I switched my ASUS Zephyrus laptop back to Windows 11 Pro. Despite the noise about ads and telemetry, my setup runs clean after a few well-chosen debloating tweaks. I keep it air-gapped most of the time and use it for GPU-heavy work like Blender 3D rendering.

Fedora 44 KDE (on the side): Still watching, still testing. Not daily driving anymore.
What Linux Needs
Linux itself isn't the problem. The problem is that hardware vendors don't treat it as a first-class citizen. When Dell pushes BIOS updates that break Linux but leave Windows untouched, that is not an oversight. It is a statement.
I was ready to close the Linux desktop chapter for good. But I keep Fedora 44 KDE around, testing it occasionally. When developers at hardware companies start treating Linux users as allies rather than beta testers, maybe things will change.
Until then, my time is too valuable to spend debugging firmware.
