Cheap But Effective: My $50 Office Security Setup That Works

The internet is filled with warnings about hacking and scams, and every day I see emails that barely dodge spam filters. Messages promising money, threatening exposure, or luring with fake content. Google does well filtering many of these to Trash, but the lurking dangers remain real and persistent.

While I run firewalls on all three of my computers, I take office security one step further with a simple setup that consists of a $20 5-port network switch, four AliExpress CAT6 cables, and a $3 power outlet with an on/off switch (see image below).

The Power of a Network Switch You Can Turn Off

Instead of using WiFi, all my devices connect via CAT6 cables to an inexpensive network switch, which in turn connects to my ISP’s modem. The key piece? I plug this switch into a cheap, $3 power outlet with an on/off switch. When I’m away from the office, the switch stays off, cutting all internet traffic in and out. The switch’s red LED light makes it easy to verify at a glance whether it’s powered on.

Whenever I leave, I flick off that switch. This simple habit blocks attacks before they reach my network, creating a partial air gap without complicated setups or expensive hardware.

Disconnecting the Uplink Cable: A Backup Strategy

My computers are configured to function on the local network even without internet access. That means I can also unplug the cable between the network switch and the ISP modem, physically severing internet access while keeping the local network running. Unplugging takes just a few seconds. No need to manually disabling network adapters or firewall rules on each device.

No Antivirus Necessary, Thanks to Good OS Choices

Running Linux, GhostBSD, and macOS across my machines means I avoid the need for antivirus software altogether, avoiding a whole class of potential security issues. Of course, I avoid risky websites, keeping my digital habits as clean as my network setup.

Why This Simple Setup Matters Today

With hacking and scams growing more sophisticated by the day, staying connected 24/7 can mean inviting trouble. My cheap network switch with the power outlet is a practical, cost-effective method to reduce risk with minimal hassle. Turning that switch off takes seconds but grants peace of mind that my office is far less vulnerable.

If you’re serious about security, consider this simple tactic. Sometimes, the best security is not about complexity, but smart, practical choices.
